2013: A Retrospective

Can't say 2013 has been too shabby, writing wise. Didn't think I was very productive, but when I think about it, maybe my perception's a bit skewered.

I wrote three short stories and published one. I'm currently revising one of the short stories, and getting ready to submit it to a publisher. I also wrote a short novel, an angel urban fantasy, The Judas Dilemma. As for submissions, I submitted two short novels, and one, Exterminating Angel, was accepted by Lyrical Press. Sadly, I've yet to receive word on the other submission.

This was also the year I entered EPIC's E-Book Awards contest, and finaled in the Fiction Short Works category. The winners will be announced in March, so I'm trying not to obsess over it.

I'm also trying to not worry about winning the screenplay contests I've entered. Semi-finaling or finaling would be great. One contest in particular I stand no chance of winning, given the volume of entries. But I'm cool with that. If I can get my name out there, that's something.

One of my writing goals is to turn my screenplays into short novels, and vice versa, make them do double duty. Also have an idea for a couple of TV series, and I need to write the pilots. (These are part of my writing goals for 2014).

Not sure what next year will bring. I'll have a new book out and, hopefully, contracts for at least two books, hopefully more. I also want to focus on writing screenplays again.

Wishing you all a prosperous and happy 2014!

Friday Guest Post: That Pesky Inner Editor

Thank you, Pamela, for hosting me on your blog. It is a pleasure to visit and I have enjoyed reading  the posts from your other guests. It is a fabulous way to discover new books to read.

The more experienced you become at writing, the more you learn and the journey becomes easier.

I would like to talk about the joy and frustration of our inner editors and when to keep that voice under control and when to give it free reign.

Recently, I set myself two strict deadlines. I am travelling to the United States in a couple of weeks to meet with my publisher and I decided to finish and polish two manuscripts to take along with me.

Well... that was the plan. I ended up with too much polish and not much finishing!

Three days of writing for six hours each day and I gained one thousand words in one story.

I actually wrote three thousand words but my inner editor would not let me keep writing and insisted that I go back each morning and revise each chapter. I wrote three thousand new words and pruned two thousand off earlier chapters.

I am usually a ‘put my head down and go for it panster’ and then I come back and edit when I have finished. Last week when my inner editor was constantly at my shoulder my productivity slowed to a crawl and I became frustrated. Writer’s block started to creep in...and then it wasn’t long before creativity flew out the window.

But, self reflection is a marvellous thing!

Instead of giving up and bemoaning this constant nagging voice, I analysed the changes I had made.

What did I find?

My chapters were stronger and the plot was a lot tighter. Dialogue had improved. Reading back over my changes I realized that my inner editor had stepped in, in a timely fashion and saved me hours of work at the end. And then I was able to put my fingers to keyboard and start flying again

So a good lesson learned.

Often we blame the inner editor for a lack of confidence and use it as a reason to procrastinate and not write. However, there are times when the inner editor can be listened to and can direct your writing in positive ways. It is a skill that comes with experience.

The more you write, the more savvy you become when dealing with that pesky inner editor.

My favorite story has recently released by Musa Publishing. Blind Lust is a sweet little paranormal romance with many unexpected twists and turns.

Blurb:
When Venus has a wager with Cupid, that prudish librarian, Lizzy Sweet cannot be enticed to love, she neglects to tell her son that Lizzy is a three hundred year old witch. The first man Lizzy sees after Cupid shoots his arrow is Josh Deegan, a famous country and western singer who has come to town to rediscover his muse, in an old farmhouse haunted by a culinary ghost. Local warlock, Wesley Gordon, who has been hitting on Lizzy to no avail for over one hundred years, is not impressed. The quirky old folk of Silver Valley watch fondly as the battle between love and lust plays out. Leaden and golden arrows zing around, spells are magicked, potions stirred, and ghosts hunted. Who will fall in love and who will let the other go forever?

Excerpt 1
Slowly, silently the full moon walked the night sky as Lizzy sat cross-legged in a circle of red candles on the damp grass in her back garden. Tall trumpet lilies bowed their heads elegantly to the moonlight, silver licorice plants formed long draping sweeps illuminated by the soft light.  The vanilla scent of white heliotrope mingled with the sweet smoke drifting across her hands, as they rested lightly in her lap.  Voices whispered in the silver birch trees and she chanted softly under her breath, repeating the incantation twenty one times.

“Unwanted love leave me be, cease your ardor, my warm regards have no path.”
At the end of each seventh incantation, Lizzy lit another candle and closed her eyes to begin the next round.

When she finished and the candles died, she stood, stretching, her body and soul renewed, clear of any carnal desires. She frowned. It had been a most peculiar day. Her body yearned for Josh, and now for the first time in thirty years, Wesley’s naked chest stayed in her mind.

Excerpt 2
“Do you believe in ghosts, Josh?” she asked quietly.

He laughed uneasily, shaking his head. “If you had asked me that a couple of days ago I would have said you were crazy, but honestly now I don’t know.”

“What about witches?” She paused. “Magic spells and potions?”

“Give me a break,” he said, running his fingers through his shaggy hair. She was silent as she gathered her thoughts.

“You’ve been here for a week, haven’t you Josh?” she asked softly.

He nodded.

“Have you felt your Aunt Helen’s presence?”

He looked at her without answering and a strong gust of wind rattled the kitchen windows. The storm clouds scurried across the moon, the sky cleared and a shaft of moonlight shone through the kitchen window. Lizzy stood bathed in moonlight, the lace of the curtains fracturing the beam, and the power of the moon goddess entered her strengthening her will.

“Thank you, mother,” she breathed, her eyes closing as she let the power do its work. She stood motionless for a full minute.

“Lizzy, are you all right?” Josh sounded wary.

She stood tall and straight, holding her hand out to him. “It’s all right Josh, I’m sorry I upset you.”

He hesitated before crossing the kitchen and taking her hand. The look of adoration in his eyes sent sparks running along her nerve endings, all she needed was his touch. Closing her eyes, Lizzy focused on the power of the mother within, to resist succumbing to temptation once again.

Bio:
Annie Seaton lives on the beautiful east coast of Australia, where she loves sitting in her writing chair, gazing at the ocean and writing stories. She has always been fascinated by all things historical and has found her niche writing contemporary romance and steampunk, where strong heroines and brooding heroes fight together to make their alternative world a better place.

Her debut novel, Holiday Affair, a contemporary romance set in the South Pacific was released as part of Entangled Publishing’s Indulgence line in March. The sequel Italian Affair is currently underway. Watch out for the story of Tom and Brianna the sex therapist who spices up his life!

Winter of the Passion Flower was released through Lyrical Press at the same time. Currently immersed in the creation of Book Two, a full length novel, the adventures of Sofia and her Scottish laird, Annie is already looking forward to the rest of the series, particularly the adventures of Indigo’s four boys: Jago and Jory, Ruan and Kit. Strong sassy heroines and rebellious heroes have a rollicking good time as they work to make the world a better place-- albeit their own steampunk world.

Blind Lust, a paranormal novella (and her favourite story) was released by Musa Publishing on 15th June.

Annie lives with her husband, and ‘Bob’ the dog and two white cats, in a house next to the beach in a small coastal town of New South Wales. Their two children are grown and married and she loves spending time gardening, walking on the beach and spoiling her two grandchildren.

Tuesday Guest Blog: The Lure of the Dark Side

Into the Darkness

by Kerri Nelson

In the battle between good and evil there is always a dark side and a light side.  In my recent release, Courting Demons, I’ve appropriately named mine “The Dark Order” and the “High Order”.  I chose “High Order” because I wanted to have the angelic feel as in “Angels We Have Heard on High”.  And although I don’t give too much detail on the High Order in this story it is sort of a given that it is run by angels or Guardians and that they have a plan that has yet to be revealed.

I can’t share that plan with you now but I can tell you that the High Order will be heavily featured in the sequel to Courting Demons…coming soon!

In the meantime, we get to visit the Dark Order several times during this story.  First, Paisley goes on trial there for her vengeance spell gone awry.  Later, we get to experience that world through the eyes of a demon character as well.

So, what is it about the dark side that so interests us?  I doubt that most of us really wish we were on the side of darkness.  But yet, we cannot deny that it has an allure to it that draws us back time and time again.

Is it the feeling of the forbidden?  The taboo taunting us?  Maybe we are just intrigued with knowing how the other half lives.

Whatever the reason, those who are fans of paranormal and fantasy cannot deny our desire to take a journey into the darkness.  In my dark world, I’ve inserted both humor and a bit of scariness but Paisley must walk a fine line between the light and dark if she is to get her life back in order.

The question remains, if given the chance, would you be willing to take a walk on the dark side?  Or, would you rather bask in the safe glow of the light?

Thanks for hosting today, Pamela.  And to everyone who drops by, don’t forget to enter my Kindle contest no later than November 7th!  The grand prize winner will be announced at my Twitter Party on November 8th.

Book Title:  Courting Demons
Blurb:
Paisley Barton was already having a bad day before she turned her husband into a rat.

First, she was fired by her boss and then came home to find hubby in the shower with a naked blonde chick. They say that hell hath no fury like a woman scorned but this break-up may just unleash hell on Earth when Paisley casts a spell of vengeance against her philandering husband.

After her spell casting inadvertently opens a portal between dimensions, Paisley finds her family home transformed into a nightly courtroom for settling disputes between demons of the underworld and she’s the judge! If that’s not enough, she’s got to deal with a charming, ancient demon named Camden who wants to be her personal bodyguard while trying to explain her husband’s sudden, mysterious disappearance to sexy police Detective Dalton Briggs.

But Paisley will show them all that an everyday working mom is better equipped than most to deal with the mystical mayhem…and with a tempting demon hottie and a flirtatious young detective vying for her affection, she soon learns that being single again isn’t so bad after all.

Open Topic Thursday: A Cover Contest

Shortly after I received my cover for Death Sword, an administrator from Embrace the Shadows notified me it was chosen as one of three book covers for their weekly "Clash of the Covers (9/6/10)."

I was surprised but delighted. The other covers were well done, which meant serious competition. If I wanted to win, I needed to put forth an effort and get votes.

And I did. I contacted people on my Twitter, Facebook, MySpace, and other sites. While I couldn't force people to vote for me, I could at least ask them to and thank them for their time.

For a while, one cover and mine were tied. The other pulled ahead. Although I put out a final plea for votes, I resigned myself to the fact I'd lost. Then I realized I hadn't failed because I gained the following:

1) Exposure. Even though Death Sword isn't slated to come out til Spring 2011, people already know of its existence. Since the cover on Embrace the Shadows links to my publisher, potential readers will know where to buy it.

2) Marketing/Promotional Opportunities. Today's authors need to be publicists as well. We need to make readers aware of our work. If I didn't ask for those votes, didn't take a proactive stance in my career, I would have watched my cover linger, probably in last place. It doesn't hurt to ask for something, as long as you're polite and not demanding.

3) The knowledge someone liked my cover enough to nominate it and others thought it was worthy to vote for.

Imagine my surprise when I went to the site on Tuesday and found the Death Sword cover had won. Maybe another author would consider this a small insignificant triumph, but for a soon-to-be published author like me, any success is significant.

So for those of you who voted for the cover, thank you for your support. I appreciate it more than you realize. :-)

Contest Results

Received my score sheets last week for a contest I didn't final in. Basically, it was the first three pages, the opening hook. And yes, Death Sword was the entry I sent in.

For not making the finals, I have to say my scores were pretty impressive. The comments were positive and helped bolster my confidence. And as any writer knows, confidence is a much needed quality in this field. This doesn't mean my book will be published, though. As I mentioned in the previous post, if it's not, I'll just have to deal with it.

But any positive experiences that come out of this story are more than welcome.
