26 Days of Preternatural Creatures: "A" is for Alp

Okay, so recently there was this A-Z blog challenge. I missed it but decided to start one of my own this month. The idea is to profile 26 supernatural beings (hopefully) beyond the ubiquitous werewolf or vampire.

The first creature is the Alp. I came across this spirit from ancient German folklore in Finlay Cowan's Fantasy Artist's Pocket Reference: Incredible Characters.

I highly recommend this book, along with Dragons and Fantasy Beasts, especially if you're into drawing or writing about mythological creatures.

Anyway, here's a link to the alp, via Wikipedia.

this was a really interesting new (to me) creature, and I checked out the books you mentioned. They are incredible!

Thanks, Carla. :-) I came across Cowan's books while searching through the art section at B&N. One of these days I hope to apply the artistic techniques as well as write stories using the preternatural creatures mentioned.
